So many hearts and spirits are heavy today after the events of last night. Whoever you voted for in support of, or voted for strategically to keep someone else out, or maybe didn’t even vote.. the election results and the future of our country worry so many. You may be filled with an overwhelming amount of stress weighing down on your soul, even if your candidate did get elected. I could go on forever about the endless concerns and possibilities… But I’ll focus on the hopeful quote, and others to follow, that resonated with me the last 12 hours…
If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.”
I have read this quote before, but it took on a whole new meaning for me today. Yes, my vote mattered. Yes, my opinion mattered. Yes, I matter. But numbers are still numbers… I am one in 324 million people in the United States of America and one in 7.1 billion people in the world. What can I do? What do I have? I can’t change the president. I can’t change the senate. And I can’t change the result of a new proposition. I don’t have a campaign team. I don’t have the authority to change laws. And I definitely don’t have the attention of the United States, nevertheless, the world. But.. I do have a family. I do have the attention of my family. I can change my home for the better. I am co-creating the unit (or a mini governing body, if you will) that God cares about most. If you are feeling discouraged that you can’t fix the world for your family, you can. As a wife and future mother, my eternal Father cares far more about my work in my family than anything else I can or can’t do in the government. The work I do in my home is so much more impactful anyway. The truth is, the power of a family far, far, far surpasses the power of the government. Families make up the population. Parents raise the next generation. And love changes the world. So again, I repeat the words of Mother Teresa, if you are wanting to change the world.. mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, go home and love your family.
To add to this, I also want to quote former First Lady, Barbara Bush.
Your success as a family… our success as a nation… depends not on what happens inside the White House, but on what happens inside your house. ”
I repeat my previous commentary. It may not be the initial ground-breaking idea that pops into one’s mind, but it’s worth more than we could ever know.
Hope is not lost. There is One in far greater control. And His promises are so much more honorable and unimpeachable than the claims of the candidates.
He promised us,
“Come unto me, all those that labour and are heavy laden, and I will you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart. And ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11)
One nation under God, may we all turn our hearts toward Him.
